Sometimes Life Gets in the Way of Quilting

I have been away from my blog for a long time.  The only thing I can blame it on is life.  It happens. William has started to walk.  But I have not been able to get any photos of him.  He has been so miserable lately because he is teething.  Two teeth have just broken through on the bottom.  But it seems there are others coming in soon.

I have been working on the red hexies (handwork) and the scrap vortex (machine work). I'll show you more later.  But for over a week I suffered from a summer cold.  It was in my head and in my lungs and for several days I had laryngitis.  It was not nice and all I wanted to do was sleep.

I also canned some produce from my garden.  I made 14 jars of peach jam, 5 jars of refrigerator pickles and 5 jars of zucchini refrigerator pickles.  I also put several jars of tomato sauce into the freezer.  Then a couple of days ago I made salsa, 7 jars of it.  It tastes delicious and makes me want to go up to the store and buy a bag of corn chips.

My garden is still growing nicely.  Here is a picture of my perennial hibiscus.  These are 6 inches across.  Very beautiful!  And they come up year after year.

I picked a bouquet of flowers to grace my kitchen table.  Sweet William, Black-eyed-Susans, Jerusalem Artichokes, Shasta Daisies and snapdragons.

Planning to do a little bit of everything today.  Some gardening, some sewing, and some zucchini grating.  Yes!  I still have way too many zucchinis!  I plan to make some fritters today.

On the Lam.......In a Jam.

I corralled the peaches and turned them into jam.  Yum.

In a jam.

I made a total of 14 jars of jam and 3 jars of peach preserves.  Some of them have already been spoken for.

Garden Stuff

I've been busy in the garden.  This what my peach tree looked like.

My DH picked some on the weekend.  And today I picked some more.

They will be totally ripe over the next few days.  I plan to can some and maybe make a batch of peach jam.  My DD wants to can some too.  She is hoping that they will last until the beginning of next week.  She has a very busy weekend lined up.

I planted some dill in my garden this spring.  When I went to take a photo of it I noticed a couple of fat caterpillars on the plant.

At first glance they looked like Monarch Butterfly caterpillars.  But why were they on my dill plants? Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweeds.   So I decided that the caterpillars in my garden were Swallowtails.  They look similar.  But Monarchs have yellow stripes and Swallowtails have yellow dots.

I picked a few more cucumbers this morning too.  Tonight I am going to make refrigerator pickles,  I made some last year and they were delicious. Still trying to figure out what to make with the abundance of zucchinis.  Maybe I'll pickle some of those too.

Since this is a quilting blog and not a gardening blog I will show you the scrap vortex I have been working on.  Still have a lot to do on this.  But the mindless sewing has been fun.  I was inspired by Crazy Mom's sew along, but I did not follow her instructions exactly.  I have made many scrap quilts and I just wanted to do something simple.  My blocks are not done yet.  And they are not sewn together.  But you get the idea.
