A Gaggle of Geese and Some Wild Ducks

When I showed you the projects I hoped to work on this month, I had completely forgotten about the Row Robin which I have been involved with for the past year. My last row commitment was due at the end of December and I thought I had already done it, but when I looked, I only found the rows that others had done and none of mine. Since there was already so much applique work in this RR, I decided to do a pieced row. The theme of this RR was birds and anything to do with birds. So, I chose 'Wild Ducks'. This block was featured on the Friday Block Party for week 43 of 2010.



As I was working on these three blocks, I kept having the strangest feeling that I had already done a row for this RR. When I was about 3/4 of the way through my third block I remembered! I looked in one of my UFO bins and found it right on top! A lovely strip of flying geese!

I finished the wild ducks anyway and have decided to send them all. Just a senior moment folks!







Here are the other rows in this quilt. I did not have enough room to lay them all out with mine included. So you will just have to use your imagination.

I also have some hexies to show you, but it is getting too dark out. I will take a photo tomorrow and show you then.

Today is day 29 of Blogtoberfest.

I finished the rest of the blocks which I showed you yesterday. Once I got them going they were not too difficult. I frogged the two blocks I did wrong yesterday and fixed them, so I only had to make three more. If you want to see more of our Row Robin, just click on the robin on my sidebar.

I'm Seeing Stars!

Day 28 of Blogtoberfest and I got nuttin'. Well not much anyway.

I joined a Row Robin a few months back. My row is supposed to be done and shipped to the next person by the end of this month. I am not going to make it. Procrastination! I should have started it earlier, but never really had the desire until this morning.

This row is supposed to be a row of stars - in bright colours. I had this star block done last year with the Friday Block Party. It's called 'Hope of Hartford'. I really like it. And no one had done one of these yet. It seemed like the perfect block. The only problem was, it's a 10in. block and the block for this row should be 9 inches

So I got out my graph paper and designed a 9in. block. Sounds easy, doesn't it? But I guess I measured wrong because the first block I made came out 1/4in. too small. That's the yellow one on the left.

Back to the drawing board!

I made another block, but it was the same. I don't know how I got it wrong twice, but I did. Not even going to show you a photo of that one. I went back to the drawing board and tried again. And I finally got it right! It's the pink one on the right.

So now I have to make 5 more blocks.

Note to self - measure twice, cut once.

I hate unsewing!

Scrap Happy Summer Parade

I am sad to report that Em's Scrap Happy Summer Challenge has come to an end. Of course this doesn't mean that I will stop making things with my scraps! I will keep playing around with even the tiniest of fabric pieces to make something new.

So for the finale. Here is my Scrap Happy Summer Parade.

I have made several more of the strip blocks. They are not sewn together yet, but I hope to have them done soon. With Mimi's help I should be able to make a quilt out of these.

On previous posts I have already shown you some of the other scrap projects that I have been working on. Here are a few of them. The small flowers, the 2 1/2 inch crumb block quilt, the picnic quilt, the klosjes and the red and blue blocks and the 3 1/2 inch crumb blocks.

I haven't shown you a photo of my ongoing flower garden for awhile. These are the larger flowers. I think this one is almost done to the flimsy stage. I am not sure how big I will make it. I guess I will stop when the flowers become boring or if I run out of scraps. So far there is no sign of either of that.

And finally for today I want to share with you the row I made for the Row Robin Barb is hosting. I used some of my scraps and some of the fabric that came with this row. The theme for this quilt is springtime.

Some More 'Spooltjes'

Not much going on in the quilting department last week. It rained for four days and I did not feel much like sewing. Luckily I had gone to the library and had lots of books to read. I did work on my row for Barb's Row Robin. I got inspired by a pattern in Lynette Jensens book, 'Cozy Cabin Quilts'. My row is the churn dash with applique at the top.I also made some more 'spooltjes' (klosjes) this weekend. I now have 72 of them. Can't believe how fast these are going. Whenever I use a fabric, I cut the pieces for another little spool. See the green one, that is from a small piece of fabric I had left over from Barb's RR.

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Warm and sunny! I did a lot of gardening - mostly pulling weeds, but I also transplanted some things into my new raised flower beds. I'll show you a photo when I get some more things planted in it. Here is a shot of the daffodils I showed you last week. I was worried that the rain would destroy them, but they look fantastic! I counted 30 blooms in this bunch.

Crazy Birds

I have been busy paper piecing my row for the Round Robin that Barb has organized. I have finally decided on my theme. It will be 'Seascapes'. I am still debating how wide to make the starting row. The length of this row will dictate every other row in the quilt. I don't want it to be too wide because I think I will make a wall hanging when all the rows are done. I was thinking that 40 inches would be a good width. But that makes it difficult for others who might want to do a 9 or 12 inch block. I am still thinking. Got any ideas?

Catching Up

It's been a long week. The infection in my jaw is getting better. But I have spent the past week talking without moving my lips or opening my mouth! I could qualify as a ventriloquist now! A ventriloquist who looks like a chipmunk. LOL The swelling is going down slowly too. As is the pain, Thank goodness!

Not much sewing has been going on, but I have worked a bit each day on the challenge our Guild gave us. We were given three fat quarters of fabric - a green, an orange and a rainbow coloured fabric. The challenge was to make a 9-patch quilt using those fabrics. There were a lot of other rules too, but I don't remember them right now. I don't even know if I am allowed to show you this. It's supposed to be a secret I think. But what the heck! Just so you don't think I was just sitting around, reading and taking naps all week, (which I was, by the way) I thought I'd show you a bit of it. I still have to sandwich and quilt it, but it does not have to be done until the end of March.

The thing that does have to get done soon is my row in the Round Robin that Barb has organized. She already has hers done and I haven't even started! I decided on the theme of Seaside or Seashore. When I saw these crazy birds I just knew I had to make a row of them. So I started this afternoon. This one took me one hour! It's only about 6inch wide, so I have a lot more to do. This is just my prototype. I plan to do a bit of re-designing to make it easier. There is also a grass block and an egg block in this pattern. I got it off the internet at Quilt Maker.
