Day Lilies, a Flimsy and a Zucchini Recipe

Several people asked me for the Zucchini Pineapple Loaf recipe.  So I will add it to the bottome of this post.  But first I want to show you my scrappy flimsy.  I started this a couple of years ago, but put it away when my machine started to give me problems.  I sewed a couple more rows and now I think I have had enough of this one.  I am calling it finished.

This quilt top reminds me of the Day Lilies I have blooming in my garden at the moment.  I love these.

This is a gorgeous peach coloured one.

I have more, but I will save them for another day.

Now for the Pineapple Zucchini Loaf recipe.  This is from a "Company's Coming" book by Jean Pare called "Muffins and More".  It is my favourite book by her.

Zucchini Pineapple Loaf

2               eggs

1/2 cup     cooking oil

1 cup        sugar

1 cup        unpeeled, shredded zucchini

1/2 cup     crushed pineapple, drained

1 tsp         vanilla

2 cups       all purpose flour

1 tsp          baking soda

1/2 tsp       baking powder

1/2 tsp       salt

3/4 tsp       cinnamon

1/4 tsp       nutmeg

1/2 cup      chopped nuts  (I have used 1 cup raisins instead of nuts and it turned out great)

Method

Beat eggs, oil and sugar.  Sir in zucchini, pineapple and vanilla.

Measure remaining ingredients in another bowl.  Stir.

Pour all at once into batter.  Stir to moisten.  Pour into greased loaf pan 9x5x3 inches.  I use a bunt pan sprayed with PAM.  Bake in a 350 degree F oven for about 1 hour.  Test to see if it is done.  A toothpick will come out clean.  Cool for 10 minutes.  Turn loaf out to cool on a rack. This is delicious if cut into slices and spread with butter.  Yield 1 loaf.

My Design Floor

It's been a crazy week.  On Monday we celebrated Victoria Day.  That's our official planting weekend.  We usually don't get any more frost after that, so I managed to get some tomato plants planted in my garden.  Can't wait for those delicious fresh, garden tomatoes this summer.

I have also been busy trying to finish the two baby quilts I'm working on.  Still some finishing touches to do before I can show them.

But I do have some interesting blocks on my design floor.  Over the years I have accumulated many orphan blocks.  I have seen a few quilts made up using blocks like these.  I want to put mine together and get them out of their bins and bags.  I think I will make this my summer project.  I have sewn a few together, but it will take a lot more thinking and planning before my orphans become a quilt.  Here are a few of the blocks I have.

 

EDIT  I left the blocks on the floor when I went to bed last night.  Big mistake!  Mini decided she didn't like my layout and arranged them for me.  So this what they look like this morning.

 

 

BOM - The Queen and Her Court

I have been working steadily on my Queen and Her Court quilt.  So far I have finished nine pieced blocks and I am working on the tenth one.  Sorry no picture of that one, but I can show you what I have done so far.  Tomorrow is the next class, so I am trying to finish what I have to date.  I hate being so far behind.

These blocks are not arranged in any order.  The quilt is going to be a huge one and these blocks will be spread around with applique blocks in between.  I managed to do one of the small applique blocks.  Since I am doing them by hand, (my machine still doesn't want to zigzag without dropping stitches)  I had to fudge the pattern a bit to make it easier to applique.  There will also be some background blocks done in 1 1/2 inch squares as in the picture.  The applique is not finished.  I had to leave openings for the stems that will tie all the applique blocks together.

It is Friday and the sun is shining!  The high temp for today will be 15C.  Shopper's Home Care phoned me this morning and is delivering my scooter between 11:00am and 1:00pm today.  I hope to be able to go out for a while after that.

Mimi is feeling much better.  Last week she jumped on my bed and meowed in my face.  Her breath was stinky.  I also noticed that she had some brown drool coming out of the corner of her mouth.  I checked her teeth and found one that was totally brown.  The gum was very red and looked as if an abscess had burst.  I took her to my daughter's vet.  They agreed with my diagnosis of tooth decay and tarter build-up.  I was given some more antibiotics.  The first vet's diagnosis was way off base. even though they charged me over $700.. There is nothing wrong with her stomach or other organs.  Poor Mimi!  She's had a toothache all this time!  She will have to go in for some dental work soon.  But I can tell that she is feeling better because she has been grooming herself.  Here she is 'hiding' from me behind the stair railing.  She loves this spot because I can't get down there to pick her up and give her her meds.

Earth Hour and More

Hope you are celebrating Earth Hour by turning off your lights for an hour this evening.  For us that will be 8:30pm until 9:30pm.  We will be at my DD's house.  I plan on taking my hexagon stars to work on by candle light.  In order to do my part for our planet in the coming year, I will try to give up plastic bags for keeping left-overs fresh to using re-usable containers instead.

In case you are wondering how they look (my hexagon stars, that is), here is the latest photo.  I am really enjoying these blocks.  They look complicated, but they are just as easy to do as any English pieced project.

 I also finished another block for my 'The Queen and Her Court' quilt.  This is definitely not my favourite block.  I still have three more blocks to do and then a lot of applique blocks.  It doesn't have to be done until August, so I have lots of time.
