I thought I would give this block another try - paper piecing it this time to see if I could get the points more pointy and exact. I love paper piecing, so I thought it would be easy. My first attempt at it yesterday did not work out very well. Because paper piecing is done on the wrong side of the block, I had to draw everything in a mirror image. I guess it was the confusion of a Saturday that prevented me from focusing all my attention on what I was doing. I could not get it to look like the original. I finally had to walk away from it.
But never to let a block get the better of me, I got up early this morning and drew up another one. I used graph paper. This time the block went together in less than an hour and a half! I was amazed. And it looks exactly like the original pattern. It is also exactly 12 1/2in. unfinished! Yippeee!!
I only wished I had used some nicer fabrics. Because I thought it would not work out, I used some left over 'train' fabric and some faded yellow that was never my favourite. I really love this block now. I think I will draw up another copy of the paper piecing, now that I know how it should look, so that I can keep it on file for future use. Yes, folks! I may make this one again sometime - in paper piecing!

i'm just as happy as you are. I like the train fabric and the yellow makes it nice. you can always make a pillow for a boy out of it.

That looks like alot of work but perfection at its best. I too love the fabric ...
Lovely block and I your penquin is adorable...
Woo-hoo! Looks terrific! You should make yourself a master template, then have someone take it to the post office or library and make some copies for you. This is when I am very thankful for my printer with built-in copier.
Great job Hetty. :-)
Wonderful block, it sure does look like a lot of work went into it.
That is a beautiful pattern. More than I want to start out as a beginner, but now I know who to call on if I'm having a problem. Isn't the internet awesome.

Wonderful block!!! The fabrics are nice!
Love the little trains. If they were not in the quilt fabric it would look dull and after you have done such a great job, you need something to show how perfect you can make things
what a great block! I often see more clearly the next day. Or somehow it just works out the next day. Weird, huh?
I think you did a terrific job!
I enjoy looking and this block and I hope maybe you'll have time this weekend to create one with the fabric you like!
